New On Members Portal June 2019

On the 13/16th May 2019 the Society supported Dying Matters Awareness Week 2019. A function at Bedford and Luton Libraries organised by Bedfordshire Archives & Records Service. At this we launched the Societies new project, Funeral Directors Records.

Paul Woodcraft meets a visitor to our stand at Bedford Library

So what are these records? T & E Neville Ltd now Neville Funeral Service Ltd have deposited 22 of their ledgers dating from 1905 to 1955 at Bedford Archive and Records Service (BARS) In these ledgers you may find the person who made the arrangements, burial or cremation, which cemetery, if an obituary and which paper used. We have also identified two other Funeral Directors who have records dating back to the 1800’s.

So what are we doing with these? Firstly we are producing an index which will show name of deceased, date of death, age and in which ledger to find the information. At present we are unable to show the ledgers due to copyright. They can be seen in the BARS search room. We hope in the near future to resolve this problem. To see the first sample index go to the Members Portal now.

You will also find well over 100 Journals from Societies that we exchange pdf journals with. These give many hours of interesting reading.

If you are a member and have not had a look at our members only page then go to the Members Portal button and fill in the request form. A username and password will be sent to you. You will require your membership number and email address.

If you are not a member but think you may enjoy the journals or find the Funeral Directors Records of interest then why not join us, To do this click on ‘Society Information/Membership.

Meeting Room arrangements for Members' Meetings at Mark Rutherford

The society holds monthly Members' Meetings (except in August), usually on the first Friday of the month, at Mark Rutherford School, Bedford MK41 8PX. The meetings are held in the Drama Theatre (turn right as you enter the school gate). The Drama Theatre has tiered seating which gives us ample seating in pleasant surroundings. Our Bookstall and Library are available at members' meetings. The Bookstall carries our own publications, our Parish CDs and a range of second hand books for you to purchase and the Library contains books and other material for members to borrow. Tea and coffee are served at the end of the meeting. Please follow the link, Future Meetings and Events for a list of our Members' Meeting dates.
